Teen shot in head, killed while sitting in SUV in Commerce City, police say

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday night while sitting in the back of an SUV in Commerce City, police said.

Investigators said the teenager was shot in the head around 6 p.m. Monday while the SUV was parked in the 5800 block of Tichy Boulevard.

The suspect, who was also in the car at the time of the shooting, fled the scene and a third, unidentified person in the car drove the victim to the hospital, where he was declared dead, police said. The victim will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

Police said a teenage boy, who police are not identifying because of his age, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of second-degree murder and possessing a handgun as a minor. Second-degree murder is when someone knowingly kills another person without the premeditation required for first-degree murder.

The teenage suspect is being held in the Prairie Vista Youth Services Center, a juvenile detention center in Brighton, police said.
