Actor Nathan Fillion amassed an enormous fanbase thanks to the popularity of shows like Castle and Firefly. But his fanbase can be so passionate about his shows that it can sometimes lead to some strange encounters.

Fillion has a very diverse fanbase thanks to the variety of shows he’s featured in, which gave him the perfect kind of fame. He’s been developing his audience ever since his soap opera days on One Life to Live before mainstream stardom brought him even broader appeal. Although Firefly helped perpetuate the perception that Fillion was a Sci-fi actor, it gave him another dedicated fanbase. Fillion also noticed that Firefly fans were a lot more sensible than fans of his other shows.

“I have always found Firefly fans to be very reasonable. I’ve certainly had some weird and unusual fans, but very rarely are those the Firefly fans. I will say that I have something in common with Firefly fans, which is that we’re all passionate about that show. I’m a fan of Firefly,” Fillion once told IGN.

However, there was one fan who didn’t display the same level of reason that Fillion was used to receiving from Firefly followers. Like Firefly, Castle has also had its share of passionate viewers. But Fillion realized firsthand there might be such a thing as too much passion when a fan confronted him over a storyline they didn’t like. Stana Katic worried a few Castle watchers back in the day when Kate Beckett’s life was put in jeopardy. A particularly concerned fan pleaded with Fillion to tell her that Beckett would be okay in the end.

“I was in Canada recently, and I was having lunch with my niece and someone came up and said, ‘Oh my God, what happened to Beckett?’ I said, ‘Oh she’s dead.’ ‘No! No, she’s not!’ ‘OK, then she’s fine.’ Whatever you want to hear, lady,” Fillion once told The Hollywood Reporter.

Nathan Fillion’s fanbase was said to be crucial for the success of ‘Castle’

Many fans tuned into Castle for the quality of the show’s storytelling and their attachment towards its characters. But in the first few years, Castle itself wasn’t enough to attract viewers. Series creator Andrew Marlore relied on Fillion’s popularity to maintain the show’s success in the beginning.

“In the early years, Nathan’s fan base was crucial to us getting the word out,” Marlowe said in an interview with Variety. “We’ve grown from there and now have fans of Castle who aren’t Firefly fans.”

In a resurfaced interview with Assignment X, Marlowe once again showed his appreciation for Fillion’s Firefly roots.

“His Firefly fans are very devoted to him and we appreciate being able to share the same universe as them,” he added.

The combination of Fillion’s loyal fanbase, and the show’s own natural growth, led to Castle becoming a pop-culture smash hit. At its peak, Castle was averaging tens of millions of viewers on a regular basis on ABC. It received praise from fans before its finale, which Fillion agreed wasn’t a good send-off, caused division among its audience.

The show’s viewership numbers and mainstream appeal even exceeded its creator’s expectations.

“You’re always hoping to connect with audiences,” Marlowe said. “We’ve been very gratified by how the show has grown, we’ve been very gratified by the word of mouth and the people who like the show and really have been supporters of it. So for us, it’s just an exciting ride. We want to keep telling great stories, and we have really great people working on the show and it’s just been very exciting for us to see the fans’ response.”

But for Marlowe and the rest of the Castle crew, nothing was more exciting than actually interacting with the show’s fans on the ground floor.

“Comic-Con was really a lot of fun. We had a great panel down there, we were so overwhelmed by the audience reaction, we were really, really gratified. But it was really exciting, because we spend so much time on the lot in our own little world that we never get out and hang with the fans. We’re going to continue to try and make great TV shows and hope people enjoy watching them, he said.
