Why we launched a La Voz Chicago WhatsApp channel

Chicago’s Latino community is growing fast. And as the community grows, so do its information needs. That’s why La Voz Chicago is launching its own WhatsApp channel—to keep you and yours informed with reliable news in Spanish.

From Pilsen to Humboldt Park and beyond, hundreds of thousands of Latinos —whether they’re five generations deep or new arrivals that came to the city seeking asylum— have built and continue to build communities around their shared culture and language.

WBEZ found that about 1 in every 5 Chicagoans is Mexican, and the group makes up the majority of those who identify as Hispanic or Latino.

More than 40 million people across the U.S. speak Spanish at home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That makes it the second most common language in the country. By 2050, the U.S. could become the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, a report from Instituto Cervantes says. These shifts not only determine how we live but also how we get our news. La Voz Chicago wants to be ahead of that curve. Spanish-speaking immigrants and their families, particularly undocumented ones, are worried about their future in Chicago, and they should be able to rely on news that speaks to their experiences.

In these critical, anxiety-inducing moments, La Voz Chicago wants to meet readers where they’re at by inviting you to join our free WhatsApp channel. We send out daily news alerts in Spanish and will experiment with other ways to use it to interact with our readers.

This is one step along the way of the many upcoming resources La Voz hopes to provide immigrants, along with a guide for immigrants looking for information on how to get work permits and find housing, legal help, healthcare and more.

WhatsApp is a tool that is already in most of the households we’re trying to reach. Together we can fight misinformation by sharing timely, fact-checked news in Spanish.

And our hard-working reporters, many of whom are bilingual and live and grew up in the communities we cover, are committed to staying on top of the latest immigration news and more in Chicago.
