Beyoncé’s performance schedule requires her to stay in shape so that she can dance and sing for hours at a time. The singer has to maintain her strength and stamina, and works hard to do so. One NBA player felt so inspired after seeing her work out that he altered his training to match hers.

Former NBA player and current Lakers coach JJ Redick recalled speaking to Kevin Garnett about Beyoncé’s workout routine.

“He is like ‘How do you think Beyonce’s in such great shape?’” Redick said on The Bill Simmons Podcast (via <a target=”_blank” href=”https://time.com/4680112/kevin-garnett-beyonce-workout/?xid=homepage” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Time). “And I’m like, ‘Uhh, I don’t know.’”

Garnett told Redick that he began singing while he worked out after seeing Beyoncé do it. He believed it helped him keep his breath when he had to talk on the court.

“One time I saw her working out, and she was doing her dances and she was singing while she was doing her dancing,” Garnett said. “So then I’m thinking to myself, maybe I should run and sing at the same time. So in the offseason, I would go to Malibu and I would go down to the beach, and when I run on the beach I would be like ‘Lalala lalala lalala,’ while I’m running. So then, when I get on the court and I’m getting back on defense and I’m talking on defense, I don’t get tired.”

Beyoncé’s trainer shared how she gets into shape before tours

During Beyoncé’s formation tour, she stayed on stage for two hours each night. She worked with trainer Margo Borges to build her stamina.

“You run out of gas fast; by pushing through [that fatigue], you develop a ton of endurance,” Borges told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/beyonce-formation-tour-workout” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Glamour in 2016.

He said she boxed and swung weighted ropes to build her endurance. He also encouraged her to alternate one minute of sprints with two minutes of brisk walking.

“Sprints are ideal for building stamina and explosiveness, which B needs to move across the stage,” he said.

Borges also recommended the kettlebell squat to build strength.

“It’s an exercise that hits all the major muscles,” he said. “If you did nothing else, you’d still get a great workout.”

He added that Beyoncé stretches at the end of each workout to boost flexibility.

She shared how she has come to view her body after having twins

Beyoncé began to feel that she put too much pressure on herself to maintain a certain body type, particularly after she had her first child, Blue Ivy.

“After the birth of my first child, I believed in the things society said about how my body should look,” she told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.vogue.com/article/beyonce-september-issue-2018″ rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Vogue. “I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it. Looking back, that was crazy.”

When she gave birth to her twins, she tried to be gentler on herself.

“I needed time to heal, to recover,” she said. “During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be. After six months, I started preparing for Coachella. I became vegan temporarily, gave up coffee, alcohol, and all fruit drinks. But I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves. My kids and husband did, too.”

She said she has learned to be more accepting of her body.

“To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller,” she said. “I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real. Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my a** off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be.”
