Marianne Faithfull Wanted ‘Blood Money’ for The Rolling Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’

Classic rock star Marianne Faithfull was the inspiration for The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” She was fine with that at the time. Since then, she became more critical of the way that Mick Jagger and company treated her.

Faithfull’s career is inextricably linked with The Rolling Stones. She dated Jagger and they were one of the only celebrity couples to come out of the British Invasion. In addition, Jagger and Keith Richards co-wrote two of Faithfull’s signature songs: “As Tears Go By” and “Sister Morphine.” Interestingly, The Rolling Stones covered both of those songs after Faithfull released them. She also served as the muse for some of The Rolling Stones’ songs.

During a 2011 interview with <a href=”https://www.loudersound.com/features/marianne-faithfull-interview-2011″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Louder, Faithfull discussed The Rolling Stones at length. “Trouble is the Stones don’t give points,” she opined. “Mick won’t do it. They don’t ‘write’ with other people — in theory. But they were grateful to use my mind and my talents — without credit.

“I kinda knew that was the deal, but when I was with Mick in the mid-60s, I was really young and naïve, so I sacrificed my name,” she said. “Obviously, I also contributed to ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ and ‘Dear Doctor’ — junk songs.” When Faithfull said ‘junk songs,” she was clearly referring to drugs rather than the quality of the tracks.

Faithfull stopped being much of a Stones fan. “I don’t listen to the Stones anymore, but I know they used me as a muse for those tough drug songs,” she said. “I knew I was being used but it was for a worthy cause. I don’t feel that anymore.

“I’d love to get: a) some credit, and b) some bloody money for the songs I helped on,” she added. “Mere inspiration? I did bloody more than that.”

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was deceptively unpopular on the pop charts. It was not a single. Instead, The Rolling Stones released it as a B-side to “Honky Tonk Women.” That track reached No. 1 on the <a href=”https://www.billboard.com/artist/the-rolling-stones/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, lasting on the chart for 15 weeks. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was not nearly as prominent in the 1960s. The ballad merely reached No. 42 and charted for eight weeks.

Since then, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” has become one of The Rolling Stones’ most popular songs. While “Honky Tonk Women” is another formulaic Rolling Stones rocker (albeit a great one), “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” showed off a more sensitive side of the band — and that resonated with a lot of people who weren’t interested in The Rolling Stones. Since its underwhelming chart performance, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” has appeared in movies, commercials, and campaign rallies. It might be the band’s most beloved song at this point — and it’s definitely their most beloved ballad by far.

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is a classic track — and maybe Faithfull deserved more credit for it.
