O’Hare Airport tug struck by wing of Air Wisconsin plane, driver injured

A worker at O’Hare Airport was injured Saturday night when the wing of a plane struck the tug vehicle he was driving.

The tug was attempting to cross a runway about 7 p.m. when it was struck by the wing of an aircraft, flipping the tug over and pinning the driver under the vehicle, according to preliminary information from Chicago police.

The 64-year-old man driving the tug was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition with injuries to his head and lower body, police said. His condition was stabilized at the hospital.

The Air Wisconsin CRJ-200 aircraft had just landed from Kalamazoo, Michigan, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation and the flight tracking website FlightAware. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on the plane. FlightAware says the plane can seat up to 50.

No passengers or crew on board the aircraft were injured, police said.

Area Five detectives are investigating.
