Actor Jessica Alba experienced many positive changes after becoming a mother, including learning how to embrace her sexuality. But becoming a parent was an adjustment period, and it took some time before she could truly feel like herself again after raising a family.

Having one child can be hard enough. Alba, for instance, has already revealed dealing with her oldest daughter, Honor, was sometimes so difficult that she had to go to therapy. But Alba and her ex-husband Cash Warren had three kids to take care of. In addition to Honor, Alba and Warren are also the parents of daughter Haven and son Hayes. The Dark Angel star always wanted a big family, so much so that she was considering adoption at one point.

“My mom grew up around a huge family, and they always wanted more kids,” she once told People. “And I was like, ‘Why don t you just adopt?’”

It seemed, however, she decided to expand her family the more traditional way. Not to say raising three daughters wasn’t challenging for Alba. However, the biggest challenges offered the best rewards when it came to the Alba family.

“Everyone says you’re outnumbered [when you have more than two kids] and that it’s challenging, but I really like it,” Alba once said in an interview with Motherly. “I think because I have such an age gap between my two girls [her oldest daughter Honor is 11, and middle daughter Haven is eight], it brought us together as a family in a different way. We really got to bond over the birth of my third child.”

Still, it took a long time before Alba could get over her insecurities after having a family.

“I was really insecure when I was 27 years old with my first child,” she says. “It took me a year after every kid to feel normal again and get comfortable with the fact that my body is different and it’s okay. I’m a lot more confident now.”

Alba and Warren haven’t always seen eye to eye, and lately the pair might be more at odds than ever before. The couple announced their divorce not too long ago, deciding that they were better off as friends. Despite whatever differences they might’ve had, however, Alba and Warren both agreed unanimously on one thing when it came to their kids.

“One thing that Jessica and I are 100% aligned on is that we’re not raising a**h****,” Warren said in an interview with Drew and Jonathan. “If they get out of line, we’re not going to stand for it. We’ve tried to maintain the values our parents taught us.”

One of the ways they did so was by having their children help them around the house.

“They have to make their beds. They have to set the table, clear the table — those are no-brainers, right? They participate in taking care of the home and themselves,” Alba said.

Additionally, Alba and Warren also helped shape their kids’ morals by having them participate in charitable events. The Fantastic Four star already recognized the value of hard work and generosity growing up in a family where her parents lived paycheck to paycheck. Given her children’s more lavish lifestyle, Alba felt she needed to pass on those values to her kids using other means.

“I’ve always told my kids that nobody chooses to be born in tough circumstances, and everyone deserves to be treated with dignity,” she said. “At Cash’s company, Pair of Thieves, they created a holiday called National Sock Day. They’ve given out millions of socks to homeless shelters, and we’ll go with the kids to distribute socks and hygiene products. During the holidays, we adopt families and the kids help me pick out gifts and put lists together—necessities like warm blankets, backpacks, and shoes but also books and toys, too. I hope my kids always feel the need to give back.”
