Palos Heights woman dies of cold exposure

An 88-year-old woman died of cold exposure Monday in southwest suburban Palos Heights.

Mary Jane Alano died about 12:40 p.m. in the first block of Moorings Drive, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Her primary cause of death was hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but the coroner’s office listed “probable cold exposure,” as a secondary cause. Her death was ruled an accident.

Alano’s was the first cold exposure death of the year in Cook County.

Dangerously cold temperatures swept through the area Monday, with wind chills reaching as low as 19 degrees below zero.

The Palos Heights Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for details.
