Arson suspect taken into custody following Griffith Park brush fire

An arson suspect was taken into custody in connection to a quarter-acre brush fire that burned below the Griffith Observatory on Monday, Jan. 20.

Approximately 40 firefighters responded at around 1 p.m. to the area of 162 Griffith Park, where light grass burned into medium brush on a slope underneath the observatory. No structures were damaged and the fire was knocked down in 31 minutes, said Los Angeles City Fire spokesperson Lindsay Lance.

The small fire broke out as the LA region faces another round of strong Santa Ana winds and elevated fire risk early this week.

Officers from the Northeast Division took the suspect into custody after a witness reported seeing the man start a fire on the 2700 block of Glendower Avenue, Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes said. Additional details on the suspect were not released.
