East Bay man arrested after $28,000 in stolen bikes are traced by victims

Burglary victims who lost $28,000 in bicycles helped lead investigators to a suspect who was taken into custody, San Francisco police said Friday.

Joseph Zachary Negapatan was accused of possession of stolen property Wednesday after a search of his San Lorenzo residence found the missing bicycles, along with other suspected stolen bikes, frames and parts, police said.

Officers responded to a residential burglary on Jan. 2 in the 2700 block of Anza Street in the central Richmond District. Several bicycles valued at about $28,000 were stolen, police said in a press release.

On Jan. 13, the victim told investigators that they’d located a possible match to their stolen bikes being sold on an online marketplace. The tip led to Negapatan, police said.

The SFPD burglary unit urges bicycle owners to keep records of serial numbers and make use of databases such as www.bikeindex.com. It is a free database that is helpful in recovering stolen bicycles, police said.

Although an arrest has been made, police said, this is an open and active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
