An incident during the sophomore game eventually led to police canceling a sold-out basketball game between Christ the King and Hope Academy on Friday.
Hope’s large athletic facility at 2650 W. Harrison was at capacity before halftime of the sophomore game. More than a hundred fans were outside hoping to get in when a minor incident between fans during the sophomore game led to dozens of police arriving and the suspension of the sophomore game.
Both teams headed to their locker rooms, and all fans were ordered to leave the facility at that point. According to multiple sources, police were going to allow the varsity game to be played without fans. But after the exiting process took more than 20 minutes, police shut down the event.
Christ The King (11-6) and Hope Academy (11-5) are both small Class 1A schools, but their basketball teams have ambitions of winning conference and state championships.
Christ The King coaches said they were told the game would be rescheduled and that the crowd may be limited to family members.
