Denver Botanic Gardens will close for three days starting Saturday as a wave of bitter-cold temperatures is expected to grip the metro area.
The nonprofit will temporarily shutter both its York Street location and Littleton-based Chatfield Farms, officials said in a Wednesday statement.
“Due to anticipated extremely cold temperatures, Denver Botanic Gardens has decided to close both sites … Saturday through Monday, Jan. 18-20, for the care and safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors,” Botanic Gardens officials said. “All who registered for classes, programs and general admission tickets will be notified via email about exchanges or refunds.”
The closures include the SCFD Free Day that was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Officials “encourage visitors to register for a future SCFD Free Day and because of this cancellation, an additional Free Day on March 17 has been added,” they said.
The National Weather Service is calling for temperatures to dip dangerously low between Saturday and Tuesday, with wind chills of -15 to -20 degrees in some cases. The Hazardous Weather Outlook, as the NWS dubbed it, includes blasts of snow and even colder temperatures outside of the metro area — some as low as -25 in northern Colorado.
