Bears interview assistant Thomas Brown for head-coaching job

If Thomas Brown’s year-end comments on the state of the Bears were a preview of his interview for the head job, general manager Ryan Poles and the hiring committee got an earful.

The Bears announced they interviewed Brown on Monday morning after a tumultuous season in which he held three different titles. After Poles and former coach Matt Eberflus bypassed Brown for offensive coordinator in favor of Shane Waldron, whom they fired after just nine games, the brought him on as passing-game coordinator. When they dismissed Waldron, they made Brown offensive coordinator. When they fired Eberflus weeks later, they asked Brown to be interim coach.

Brown went 1-4 after taking over for Eberflus, and at the end of the season said he would’ve handled plenty of things differently if he’d been in charge from the start. He said his offense for quarterback Caleb Williams would’ve been “a lot different,” he would’ve taken a different approach with Tyrique Stevenson and would’ve run a tighter ship overall in a season in which Bears veterans complained repeatedly about the team’s lack of discipline.

Brown, 38, has been a prominent candidate for head-coaching jobs the past few offseasons and likely will draw interest from other teams either as coach or offensive coordinator. He is expected to interview with the Seahawks for offensive coordinator.
