Police ID man shot and killed in Hayward

HAYWARD — Police here have confirmed the identity of a man who bled to death after being shot at an encampment last month.

Shawn Freeman, 42, was shot and killed on the night of Dec. 7, at an encampment near Industrial Boulevard and Highway 92 in Hayward. No arrests have been announced and police haven’t said if they pinpointed the motive for the shooting.

One of Freeman’s friends reported the shooting to police, waited for officers at a nearby store and led them to Freeman’s body, shortly before midnight. He was pronounced dead a few minutes after midnight on Dec. 8, authorities said.

Police haven’t said whether Freeman was the intended target. His killing was Hayward’s 14th and final homicide of 2024.
