Sunnyvale: Two arrested in fatal 2017 shooting

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a 2017 shooting in north Sunnyvale that left one man dead and another wounded, authorities said.

The Sunnyvale Police Department SWAT team arrested Vicente Aguilera-Chavez in East Palo Alto and Agustin Sandoval in Escalon in San Joaquin County on Friday following a two-day operation. Both suspects were then booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on murder charges, according to Sunnyvale police Capt. Dzanh Le.

The investigation stemmed from the June 8, 2017, shooting at a parking lot in the Fair Oaks Plaza, located in the 900 block of E. Duane Avenue. About 2 a.m. that day, police responded to a report of shots being fired. Edu Veliz-Salgado, 21, was discovered dead at the scene while another man, a 24-year-old, was found shot and wounded nearby. The suspects took off before police arrived.

Police are still investigating a motive for the shooting. Le said the department doesn’t believe the victims and suspects knew each other prior to the June 8 incident.

Veliz-Salgado was Sunnyvale’s first homicide victim of 2017.
