Letter carrier robbed at gunpoint in Harvey; 3 arrested

Charges are pending for three people after a U.S. Postal Service worker was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday morning in south suburban Harvey.

The letter carrier was delivering mail just before 10 a.m. in the 15800 block of South Halsted Street when someone approached the worker, displayed a handgun and demanded money, Harvey police said.

The robber, described as a male, stole two bins full of packages and a backpack before fleeing, police said.

While searching for the suspect in the area, USPS inspectors heard gunshots, which led them to chase three people to a nearby home in the 600 block of East 157th Place. The three were taken into custody at the home, where officers recovered the stolen mail and two firearms, police said.

Harvey police and the USPS are investigating.
