On the birthday of Elvis Presley, it’s a great time to look back at his catalog. After wooing the world with a cover of “Blue Suede Shoes,” blue became the rock star’s color in many of his songs. Here are five tracks where Elvis celebrated azure.

1. ‘Blue Suede Shoes’

On Elvis’ birthday, it’s nice to go back to where it all started. The first track of Elvis’ first album, “Blue Suede Shoes” set the tone for a lot of his early music. While Carl Perkins wrote and initially performed the song, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s cover would outshine the original.

“Well, it’s one for the money / Two for the show / Three to get ready / Now go, cat, go” remains one of rock’s most beloved opening lines. You can tell because it’s been quoted everywhere. Do yourself a favor and listen to this classic track again with new ears.

2. ‘Blue Hawaii’

<a href=”https://slate.com/culture/2013/06/the-beatles-on-juke-box-jury-when-john-lennon-was-simon-cowell.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Salon reports that, in 1963, John Lennon opined that Elvis had lost his edge and become Bing Crosby. That wasn’t entirely a bad thing. For his blockbuster movie Blue Hawaii, Elvis covered Crosby’s song of the same title. He blew the original out of the water.

Who could possibly listen to this song without wanting to go to the ocean? It’s a beautiful tribute to the glories of nature. Interestingly, this song has proven influential. Nicki Minaj swiped the line “The night is young / And so are we” for the chorus of her dance hit “The Night is Still Young.”

3. ‘Blue Christmas’

Is it really Christmas until you hear this song? Long before Mariah Carey released “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” or Darlene Love released “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” Elvis put out this ditty about the pain of not being with the one you love during Yuletide. It packs all the emotional punch that it did 70 years ago.

On top of that, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll managed to sound downright sexy when he sang “Blue Christmas.” On the surface, the track isn’t exactly risque. However, a sex symbol like Elvis could make anything hot.

4. ‘Indescribably Blue’

One of the lesser-known songs on this list, “Indescribably Blue,” deserves mention for its operatic sound. The backing vocals alone belong in the score of a cinematic epic. The tune also displays a different side of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

During the 2010s, the Elvis estate released a trio of records that replaced the backing tracks of his songs with instrumentation by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Those records were If I Can Dream, The Wonder of You, and Christmas with Elvis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Those albums are nice, but Elvis already dipped his toe into that sound with “Indescribably Blue.”

5. ‘Moody Blue’

The title track of Elvis’ final album, “Moody Blue” has a memorable place in the singer’s discography. It’s about a man who can’t quite seem to understand the woman in his life. Considering Elvis’ marriage with Priscilla Presley wasn’t always great, it’s easy to interpret the track as being about their relationship.

While the lyrics of “Moody Blue” are a bit sad, Elvis performs them with a spring in his step. Over 20 years after his debut, Elvis still sounded good on “Moody Blue.” He could have given us so much more incredible music. However, on Elvis’ birthday, we can all find joy in the astonishing catalog he left behind.
