Former Rep. Barbara Lee quietly forms committee to run for Oakland mayor

OAKLAND — Former Rep. Barbara Lee, a veteran of Congress and champion of progressive politics in the East Bay, has formed a campaign finance committee in a move that signals a possible run for mayor of Oakland.

Lee, who has not pulled papers for the top city office, did not immediately confirm she’s running and close representatives said only that the former congresswoman would make an announcement later in the week.

But the new filing with Sec. Shirley Weber’s office provided enough evidence for Oakland’s political circles to begin preparing for the reality of a seasoned political stalwart seeking to lead the troubled town.

Oakland is in the midst of a perilous budget crisis and declining economy, but its crime numbers are improving and City Hall is undergoing a shake-up in leadership.

If she does run, Lee will face competition from Loren Taylor, a former mayoral candidate, and Renia Webb, former chief of staff to ex-Mayor Sheng Thao, who was recalled by voters in November.

The special election to replace Thao is expected to take place April 15. Voters in that election will also select a new representative for the District 2 city council seat and a potential new sales tax.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
