Man fatally shot in East Oakland

OAKLAND — A 25-year-old man was fatally shot Monday night in East Oakland, authorities said.

The death came just hours after city leaders lauded a reduction in gun violence in 2024, praising the revival of an anti-violence strategy known as Ceasefire.

The man’s name was not immediately released pending notification of his family.  Police did not say where he lived.

The shooting happened about 9:01 p.m. Monday in the 4300 block of Fleming Avenue, a primarily residential area.

Initial reports were that the man was apparently sitting inside a parked vehicle when someone standing outside shot him.  The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The shooter fled before police got to the scene.

A motive for the killing was not released by investigators. No suspect information was released.

The killing is the 83rd homicide investigated by Oakland police in 2024.  Last year at this time police had investigated 126 homicides in the city, the final tally for 2023.
