Bitter cold cracks rail, causing Brown Line service interruptions

Bitter cold apparently caused a CTA train track to crack Thursday morning, causing Brown Line service to be temporarily suspended between the Kimball and Southport stations on the North Side.

As a result, trains are operating only between the Southport and the Loop stations, a CTA alert said.

A section of the track cracked and a repair crew was sent in to fix it, according to CTA spokesperson Manny Gonzalez.

“The cracked rail was likely caused by the cold,” said Gonzalez. “They did make the repair,” he added.

Service was expected to resume shortly, he said as of about 8:25 a.m.

Shuttle buses will be made available between Kimball and Southport to provide connecting service through the affected area, the CTA said.

Riders can consider alternatives such as nearby bus routes, or using buses to other rail lines. Additionally, consider using the #81 Lawrence and #82 Kimball bus routes.
