Prince Harry’s opening up about the rumors concerning him and Meghan Markle. In a rare move, the Duke of Sussex, 40, addressed divorce rumors during a December 2024 interview. (He and the Duchess of Sussex, 43, celebrated six years of marriage in May 2024.) But what Harry said may not have helped matters, according to royal commentators.

Speaking at the New York Times DealBook Online Summit on Dec. 4, 2024, Harry had a wide-ranging conversation with host Andrew Ross Sorkin. Among the topics they covered were the divorce rumors that seemingly pop up about Harry and Meghan every few months.

“Apparently, we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times,” Harry said. “We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?” He went on to discuss tabloid headlines, describing it as “definitely not a good thing.”

“So, it’s just like, what? It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it,” he said. “The people I feel most sorry about are the trolls. Their hopes are just built and built…and then it doesn’t happen. So, I feel sorry for them.”

After Harry’s appearance, royal commentators Kate Mansey and Roya Nikkah discussed whether or not it was a wise move on “The Royals” podcast.

Mansey, royal editor of The Times U.K., questioned the timing. “I think it’s interesting that he’s addressing those rumours [sic] publicly,” she said (via <a href=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1986443/prince-harry-meghan-markle-relationship” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Express). “It seems like quite a strange thing to do.” So, why now? Why this particular interview to address the rumors? “I think he’s rattled by a lot of what’s written about him and he always has been,” Mansey said.

As for whether or not it helped or hurt Harry, Mansey and Nikkah were undecided. “It will take a PR expert to decide if that was a good move or not,” Mansey added. “If it’s nonsense, just don’t address it publicly because you’re creating a story of your own making.”

Harry also seemingly dismissed rumors of moving back to the U.K. with Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3. “I very much enjoy living here and bringing my kids up here. It’s a part of my life that I never thought I was going to live.”

Saying “it’s the life” Princess Diana “wanted for” him, Harry shared he’s “hugely grateful” for the “fantastic opportunity” he gets to “do the things I’m able to do with my kids that I undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the U.K.”

Harry went on to discuss how he’s gone from one end of the spectrum to the other when it comes to tabloid stories. “Throughout my life, there would be moments in my life when I read a lot and moments when I read nothing,” he said, noting he “highly recommend[s] the latter.”

“Once you stop reading the stuff about yourself, you automatically remove the power from their hands,” he explained. “With that element of fear comes an element of control and one of the reasons I probably didn’t, I guess, remove myself from that situation sooner was that very fear: ‘Well, they control the narrative, whatever I do or say, they can effectively control me and keep me in that space.’”

Harry opened up about reading tabloid stories about himself and, later, Meghan, in his Spare memoir. His therapist even suggested he was addicted to “raging” at the media.

“If there was one thing to which I did seem undeniably addicted, however, it was the press,” he wrote. “‘Reading it, raging at it, she said, these were obvious compulsions. I laughed. ‘True. But they’re such s***.’ She laughed. ‘They are.’”
