MOUNTAIN VIEW — A person died early Monday when a vehicle crashed on U.S. Highway 101, the California Highway Patrol said.

A second person also suffered major injuries during the wreck, which happened about 1:35 a.m. in the northbound direction of the highway. That person was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
According to the CHP, a sedan going north crashed into a center divider near the Shoreline Boulevard exit. The driver of the sedan died at the scene, the CHP said. Authorities did not identify the person immediately.
The crash also sent debris into the other lanes of the highway, puncturing the tires of an undisclosed number of vehicles that were in the area.
The CHP closed down all lanes of the highway during the investigation. They opened two of those lanes about 3:55 a.m. and had the highway fully opened at 5:10 a.m.
