The 44th Annual Spirit of the Holidays parade will march through downtown San Pedro from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, an annual highlight that launches the yuletide season in the port community.
Sponsored by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, the parade draws a full lineup of marching bands, drill teams and local dignitaries as folks line Pacific Avenue and Sixth Street to cheer and to watch the passing parade.
It goes on every year, no matter the weather, though this year, it looks like be a sunny 67 degrees.
The route begins at 13th Street and Pacific Avenue, turns right onto Sixth Street, and ends at Sixth and Palos Verdes streets. Under the events tab on the chamber’s website, there is a map of the route.
The festive tradition brings together families, Little Leagues, Scouts, students, high school bands, equestrian units and volunteers to celebrate the holiday season and the community. More than 9,000 individuals are expected to line the streets to view the colorful parade. Spectators are advised to arrive early to get a good spot.

The parade also kicks off the holiday season in the port town, where there will be a community tree lighting ceremony and harbor boat parade the following weekend, with a series of free events on the waterfront:
Tree lighting ceremony: 5:15 p.m. on the town square next to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum at Sixth Street and Harbor Boulevard. This event is part of the larger 2024 Holidays by the Sea on the LA Waterfront, which will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Port of Los Angeles’ 63rd Holiday Boat Parade: From 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in the harbor’s Main Channel, featuring decorated and lighted boats, including powerboats, sailboats, tall ships and harbor working craft.
Other Saturday activities: The day will also include outdoor markets, Santa visits and photos, food vendors, and entertainment, all taking place on and around the new section of promenade and open space at the town’s West Harbor waterfront attraction now being built south of the Maritime Museum. There will be holiday shopping featuring vendors, artists and craftspeople, and local entrepreneurs.
Downtown San Pedro’s holiday decorations, meanwhile, are now all installed overhead and along Sixth Street and on other blocks where restaurants are anticipating an uptick in businesses throughout the next month. The new decorations — replacing some older ones — debuted during Christmas 2023 and will be expanded each year, said Ryan Blaney, who heads up the Downtown San Pedro Business Improvement District.
The 37th Heart of the Harbor parade in downtown Wilmington, meanwhile, is set for noon on Sunday, Dec. 8, along Avalon Boulevard between F and M streets.
