Teen wounded in Oakland drive-by shooting, two suspects arrested

OAKLAND — A 13-year-old boy was wounded in a drive-by shooting in East Oakland Thursday night and two suspects were later arrested, authorities said.

Five other youths who were with the boy wounded escaped injury, police said.

The shooting happened about 6:53 p.m. Thursday in the 9500 block of Walnut Street, a primarily residential area.

Police said the 13-year-old boy was standing outside with the other youths, ranging in age from 12 to 17, when an SUV drove down the street and two occupants inside began shooting at them, continuing to fire as the intended victims ran away.

The 13-year-old was shot in the arm. He was in stable condition at a hospital Friday.

Investigators said the SUV was spotted by patrol officers a short time later parked and unoccupied in the area of 100th Avenue and B Street. Officers watched the vehicle until two men, 18 and 19-year-old Oakland residents, got inside and started to drive away. The SUV was stopped by police and the two men were arrested.

An assault rifle and pistol believed used in the shooting were subsequently recovered, police said.

A motive for the shooting has not yet been released. It was not immediately known if the suspects knew the youths being shot at.

The suspects were booked at Santa Rita Jail on multiple counts of attempted murder and were being held without bail.
