Man faints, later dies after being run over in Hayward parking lot

HAYWARD — A 66-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon after he fainted and was run over by a vehicle, police said.

The name of the man, a Hayward resident, has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, authorities said.

Police said in a news release that about 1:33 p.m. Wednesday officers responded to the report of a collision involving a small truck and pedestrian in an apartment complex parking lot near the 26000 block of Gading Road.

Officers arrived and located the driver and pedestrian still there.

During the investigation, it was determined the 66-year-old man, who lived at the complex, had a medical emergency prior to the collision, which caused him to faint in the parking lot. Police have not yet said what kind of medical emergency it was.

The driver reportedly did not see the man on the ground and made a turn in the parking lot before striking him, police said.

The injured man was found conscious and breathing and spoke with officers at the scene, police said. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment where his health rapidly declined, and he was pronounced deceased at 3:03 p.m., police said.

The truck driver, a 52-year-old Hayward man, was cooperative and provided a statement to police, authorities said.

Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact the police traffic bureau at 510-293-7011.

This is the seventh fatal collision investigated by Hayward police this year.
