The incident started around 8:50 a.m., when a car crash was reported near Lone Tree Way and Slatten Ranch Road, according to Antioch police Lt. John Fortner. A man was seen running from a black sedan into the Slatten Ranch Shopping Center.

Fortner said the same man carjacked a silver SUV in the parking lot near the Panda Express restaurant.

The suspect drove away with the victim, a woman, still inside the SUV, but she managed to escape near the Walmart Supercenter on Lone Tree Way, according to Fortner.

While patrolling the area, officers found the SUV and initiated a pursuit. The chase, however, was called off when the man started speeding toward a school zone, Fortner said.

The suspect abandoned the SUV in the 3100 block of View Drive and ran to the intersection of Alcala Street and West Tregallas Road, where he tried to open several parked vehicles, according to Fortner.
