Panorama girls flag football beats Foshay for first win in City playoffs

The Panorama girls flag football team had an overall record of 1-9 and finished last in the Valley Mission League last year in its inaugural season.

This season, the Pythons won seven of their last nine games in the regular season and finished in first place in the Valley Mission League, going 15-10 overall and 6-2 in league.

On Wednesday, the Pythons earned their first playoff win in program history in the first round of the L.A. City Section Division I playoffs. The Pythons dominated in all facets of the game on their way to a 26-0 win against Foshay Learning Center.

The Pythons advance to the quarterfinals and will face Roosevelt on Wednesday.

“We worked so hard all season and got better throughout the year,” Pythons head coach Yancy Alvarenga said. “The experience from last year and all the returners we have has really given us a huge step forward in our program. We’ve been able to get hot and have been playing on all cylinders. Every team can always get better and that’s what we need to do, but at least we came out with a win today.”

The Pythons scored 20 points in the first 10 minutes of action.

Quarterback Yadhira Hermenegildo ended her day with 190 total yards and helped account for four touchdowns.

The Panorama offense couldn’t be stopped and the defense forced four turnovers. Rozita Tajik and Arlett Alvarado each recorded one interception while Livier Andrade recorded two.

On offense, Andrade scored three of the team’s five touchdowns in the game.

Andrade ended her day with 10 catches for 148 yards, three touchdowns and a one-point conversion. Two of her touchdown catches were of at least 40 yards.

Andrade, who is a junior, played with the Pythons last season and has been a huge catalyst for the turnaround of the program.

“Hopefully we can make it to the championship this year,” said Andrade. “We’ve been putting in the work since summer so it’s a bit confusing how we didn’t have the same success last season, but we have it now. Right now we have girls injured but I told them today was for them so I had to go all out for them. Panorama gets seen as a lower school, but we’re going to change that.”
