Two charged with killing Hayward teen in drive-by shooting

OAKLAND — Two men have been charged with murder in the drive-by shooting of an 18-year-old who was struck in the brain stem and died seven hours later, court records show.

Daniel Ramos, 46, and Angel Pimentil, 26, have been charged with murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, and shooting from an occupied motor vehicle, court records show. Ramos, the suspected shooter, has also been charged with a gun enhancement for allegedly firing the shot that killed the victim.

Police say the victim, 18-year-old Angel Enciso Ayala, was driving in a vehicle down the 27000 block of Pompano Avenue when the suspects passed him in their own vehicle. At the exact moment the two cars passed each other, Ramos allegedly opened fire, striking Enciso Ayala in the neck. He crashed his car on Havana Avenue a short distance away.

The Chevrolet Suburban that Ramos allegedly fired from was registered to him, and so he quickly became the lead suspect. Pimentil was identified as a possible aider and abettor after police scanned the car’s computer system and learned that his cellphone’s bluetooth system was booked up to the Chevrolet before, during, and after the homicide, according to court records.

Ramos has been arrested and appeared in court twice, but has not yet entered a plea, according to court records. Pimentil does not appear to have yet been arrested.

Jail records for both Alameda County and San Joaquin County — where Pimentil has been known to frequent — indicate he’s not in custody in either jurisdiction. He has not yet had appeared in court.

Both men have had prior contacts with police. Ramos has been convicted of possessing an assault weapon in 2010, while Pimentil’s prior convictions include gun possession and possessing drugs in a jail facility, court records show.

Pimentil’s most recent conviction came in 2019, for second degree robbery in Alameda County, court records show.

While still on parole last year, police investigated him for a potential parole violation based on an Instagram post on another person’s account showing him brandishing a revolver. He was never charged, but during the investigation police determined that he was a member of a Hayward-based gang, authorities said.

Ramos is being held without bail. Police have not disclosed the motive for the shooting, nor said if Enciso  Ayala was the intended target or the victim of a mistaken identity.
