American Red Cross in L.A. urged residents to duck, cover and hold in quakes

American Red Cross Los Angeles Region, along with its partners from the Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA), joined a media event to educate the public on earthquake safety and preparedness, hosted by Southern California Edison at the utility’s Irwindale campus on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.

At 10:17 a.m. in Edison’s Emergency Operations Center about 100 employees practiced “duck, cover, and hold on” — a rule that more and more Southern Californians are remembering and practicing each year.

The Los Angeles area is no stranger to earthquakes, seeing an average of five each year with a magnitude of between 3.0 and 4.0, officials said on Thursday. The recent Malibu earthquake was the 14th in Southern California in 2024, according to Caltech.

The U.S. Geological Survey says that in the next 30 years there is a 46% chance of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake and a 31% chance of a 7.5 quake in the region.

So to ensure that residents are ready for the “Big One,” the American Red Cross Los Angeles Regionencouraged all residents to participate in the Great ShakeOut drill on Thursday. Whether you were at home, work, or school, it was a chance to learn or re-learn what to do if the ground starts shaking.

Great ShakeOut Earthquake drills are annual opportunities to learn and practice with millions of people worldwide. As the Red Cross says, everyone, everywhere should know how to protect themselves whether they live, work, or travel to an area where earthquakes are common.
