Week 8’s top high school football games

No. 7 Lyons at No. 25 York

7:30 p.m. Friday: It’s the second consecutive high-profile matchup for Lyons (7-0, 5-0 West Suburban Silver), which rallied from 20 points down to edge previously unbeaten Downers Grove North 21-20 last week. Dominic Pisciotti threw three touchdown passes to Mack Long, who starred on offense and defense with five catches for 115 yards, an interception and 7½ tackles. York (6-1, 3-1) has only one loss, 35-14 to Downers North. Bruno Massel is a prominent member of the area’s best quarterback class in years, and Notre Dame-bound lineman Joseph Reiff anchors the defense.

No. 2 Mount Carmel Vs. No. 18 Fenwick at Triton

7:30 p.m. Friday: Vanderbilt commit Jack Elliott returned from a one-game injury layoff and turned in a vintage performance for Mount Carmel (5-2) in the Caravan’s 35-21 win against Joliet Catholic last week. He passed for 239 yards and two touchdowns, including a 78-yarder to freshman Marshawn Thornton. But Elliott didn’t run as much as usual as he focuses on staying healthy for the stretch run. Fenwick (6-1) has only one loss — Joliet Catholic beat the Friars 14-13. They have the area’s top senior and a top-60 player nationally in Nate Marshall. Committed to Auburn as a defensive lineman, the 6-4, 265-pounder is also making plays as a receiver.

Minooka at No. 11 Oswego

7 p.m. Friday: When Oswego (7-0, 3-0 Southwest Prairie West) has been good over the years, it’s usually the defense leading the way. That’s the case this fall as Iowa-bound linebacker Carson Cooney paces a unit that has allowed only 46 points. Donovan Williams’ 88-yard pick-six highlighted the 24-7 win against Yorkville last week. Minooka (6-1, 2-1) lost 21-7 to Yorkville in Week 6 but bounced back with a 23-7 win over Plainfield North last week. Quarterback Zane Caves passed for 149 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score.

No. 17 Libertyville at Lake Forest

7 p.m. Friday: Libertyville (7-0, 5-0 North Suburban) has been one of the season’s breakout teams thanks to an offense averaging just over 42 points. A big reason is the play of Oklahoma State baseball recruit Quinn Schambow, a quarterback who has completed 74% of his passes for 2,126 yards and 35 touchdowns with only one interception. Lake Forest (5-2, 3-2) opened eyes with a 38-7 win against Warren in Week 3.

Morris at Sycamore

7 p.m. Friday: Sycamore coach Joe Ryan, in his 32nd season, reached the 200-win milestone in the 28-13 victory over LaSalle-Peru last week. Burke Gautcher, a quarterback/defensive back who committed to Iowa as a linebacker, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more for the Spartans (7-0, 4-0 Interstate Eight). Morris (5-2, 3-1) has losses to Peoria and Rochelle. With starting quarterback Brady Varner sidelined by injury last week, sophomore R.J. Kennedy passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in a 59-0 rout of Ottawa.
