Letters: Complaints about the Electoral College are rooted in ignorance and arrogance

America is a constitutional republic, not a democracy, for a very good reason: to prevent the potential tyranny of the majority. In other words, mob rule. Which is what a pure democracy is.

House representatives and senators are now majority-elected. However, senators were previously appointed rather than popularly elected, which certainly changed the dynamics of how that government body performs. In my opinion, not in a good way.

Letter: With everything going on in the world, why is abortion treated like a top priority?

As was pointed out, the president is elected by 51 separate elections. The wisdom of the Founders is reflected is this unique election, presidential candidates must secure a coalition out of those 51 elections, which gives a voice to people who would otherwise be ignored.

The national popular vote is just a scam to silence the voices of “flyover country” in favor of our “coastal elite” who think they know best.

If they truly wanted to democratize the national popular vote they would propose it as a Constitutional Amendment to be voted on by the people, and then ratified by the Legislature of each state, a much more difficult task.

Instead they are trying an end run called the “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact,” which is NOT put up to voters to decide (democracy) but is instead simply passed by a majority of legislators in each state.
