On the Whim scores upset at Santa Anita

On the Whim and jockey Tiago Pereira rallied for a mild upset in the $100,000 California Flag Handicap, a hillside turf sprint for Cal-bred 3-year-olds and up at Santa Anita on Sunday.

The 4-year-old gelding trained by Dean Pederson paid $8 for his fourth win in nine starts and second in a state-bred stakes following his California Dreamin’ Stakes at Del Mar. So I’m Told and Fast Buck finished off the board. Favorite Johnny Podres was sixth.

Holiday racing Monday at Santa Anita features the $80,000 Swingtime Stakes, a turf mile with East Coast shipper Queen of the Mud and jockey Juan Hernandez favored in a field of fillies and mares.
