6 arrested in West Side train heist

Six people were arrested Friday afternoon after a crowd of people was seen removing boxes from a stopped frieght train on the West Side, railroad officials said.

A Union Pacific train was stopped while awaiting an interchange with a partner railroad around 3:30 p.m. near Lake Street and Lockwood Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. That’s when a group of people began opening some shipping containers on the train and removing merchandise, Union Pacific and Chicago Police said.

Union Pacific officials said they had six people were arrested, and some of the stolen items were recovered. That includes two taken into custody by Chicago police.

“Rail burglaries pose a safety threat to the public, our employees and local law enforcement officers,” said Union Pacific in a statement.

No other information was immediately available.
