Man dies in San Leandro two alarm apartment fire that left 12 residents displaced

SAN LEANDRO — A 78-year-old man was killed in a two-alarm fire at his apartment Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Two other residents of the apartment were able to escape the flames, but the family dog also died, officials said.

The coroner’s office identified the man killed as Theodis Patterson.

The fire erupted about 3:23 p.m. Sunday in an apartment at a complex in the 14600 block of Washington Avenue, the Alameda County Fire Department said.

The apartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

Two other residents of the burning apartment were able to escape on their own but Patterson was not able to and was killed, authorities said.

The fire department said the family dog was also found dead.

Officials said a total of four apartments at the complex were damaged in the fire.  Twelve total  residents were displaced and were being assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
