Man dies days after he was shot walking home in Austin

An autopsy is planned for Monday for a man who died over the weekend following a shooting as he walked to his Austin neighborhood home on the West Side.

Just after 8 p.m. Thursday, James Young was exited his vehicle and began walking toward his home in the 1000 block of North Long Avenue when a white sedan approached and someone inside opened fire, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Young, 36, was shot once in the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital initially in serious condition, according to the police report. Young, who lived in the same block where he was shot, was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled.

Three shell casings were found in the street, authorities said.

No one was in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating.
