OAKLAND — A 37-year-old man sought in an alcohol-related hit-and run crash that left a 17-year-old girl dead and her mother injured in East Oakland has been arrested, police said Friday.
The suspect in the Aug. 19 crash, Agusto Matias of Oakland, surrendered to police on Thursday. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 1.
He was formally charged Sept. 4 with several crimes, including felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more and causing injury, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with misdemeanors of hit-and-run driving and being an unlicensed driver. authorities said.
According to authorities, Matias, who was arrested the same day as the crash, was released from custody four days later pending further investigation, including confirming his blood alcohol level. Authorities said that blood-alcohol measurement was found to be .11 and that they obtained a $230,000 arrest warrant.

Mardenia Carrillo Lopez, 17, and her 46-year-old mother were in a crosswalk in the 7200 block of International Boulevard at Havenscourt Boulevard about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 when they were struck by a vehicle Matias was allegedly driving. Authorities said Matias was fleeing after being involved in an earlier minor collision at a different location.
After allegedly striking the girl and her mother, Matias continued driving but crashed a few minutes later in the 8400 block of International Boulevard, where he was arrested by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies.
Authorities said Matias admitted drinking prior to the collision and that he was remorseful for what happened.
