Welcome back to the Bay Area News Group’s high school football roundup.

Here, you’ll find all the details from the weekend’s action in this news organization’s coverage area, which encompasses teams that play in leagues based primarily in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

Ranked teams

No. 1 De La Salle 38, St. Mary’s-Stockton 35

Quarterback Toa Faavae and running back Derrick Blanche each scored two touchdowns as De La Salle overcame a four-point deficit after three quarters to win on the road in Stockton. Darren Sabedra has the details here.

St. John Bosco 35, No. 2 Pittsburg 14

Pittsburg kept the score respectably close against national powerhouse St. John Bosco-Bellflower as Marley Alcantara completed 26 for 33 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the visiting Bay Area team. Nathan Canilao has the recap here.

No. 7 San Ramon Valley 51, No. 9 McClymonds 14

For the second year in a row, San Ramon Valley routed McClymonds in a non-league matchup, this time at the Mackhouse. Running back Matthew Garibaldi started the scoring with a short touchdown, but the passing game is what stood out for the Wolves. Rhett Thompson threw for five touchdowns, three to Evan Economos, one to Sammy Avalos and the other to Owen Scott. Michael Yribarren rushed for a 17-yard touchdown to get SRV over the half-century mark. Sharky Tamale and Desmond Sparks ran for touchdowns to account for McClymonds’ points. Mack (1-3) will travel to Berean Christian on Oct. 5, while SRV (4-0) visits Hayward on Friday. – Joseph Dycus

No. 8 Los Gatos 62, Mountain View 6

The Wildcats had no trouble with Mountain View on Thursday night. Los Gatos was up 48-0 at the half and cruised to an easy victory. Scotty Brennan tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Owen Panu and ran for a 4-yard score. Grayson Doslak had a two-yard rushing TD to close out the first quarter. Doslak added a 16-yard rushing score to put the Cats up 28-0. Brayden Smith was next with a 11-yard rush TD. Justin Mazzaferro put Los Gatos up 42-0 with an eight-yard run to the end zone. Doslak reached the end zone one more time with a 26-yard rushing touchdown before the half. Hayden Benjamin padded the Cats’ advantage with a 37-yard rush TD in the third quarter. Mountain View got on the board later in the third with Liam Tyler’s 17-yard TD catch. Los Gatos closed out the scoring with Jack Harrington’s 17-yard scamper to the end zone. – Christian Babcock

Burlingame 19, No. 10 Wilcox 18

Burlingame emerged victorious in Santa Clara by the skin of its teeth. Cole Hardtke, Jack Flanzer and Jake Flood scored touchdowns for the Panthers. Burlingame had a crucial goal-line stand in the third quarter, then drove 99 yards for a TD. “Changed the game right there,” said Panthers coach John Philipopoulos. Burlingame forced two fumbles to amass extra possessions in the win. Brayden Rosa scored two touchdowns for Wilcox, and Elijah Vallejo punched in one. Christian Babcock

No. 13 California 47, Antioch 18

Arjun Banerjee tossed four touchdowns as California routed Antioch on the road. Jhadis Luckey had a receiving and a rushing touchdown. Nick Hubbard, Jake Westfall and Aiden Rumble each caught a touchdown pass. Junior running back Jordan Lee rushed for a score. Everett Cross led a stout Grizzlies defense. Antioch (2-2) will host Monte Vista at home next week while California (4-0) goes to Granada. – Nathan Canilao

No. 15 Clayton Valley 34, Northgate 17

Tyson Lovett threw two first-quarter touchdown passes, one to Logan Knapp and the other to Tony Keck, as the host Ugly Eagles squared their record at 2-2. Hayezon Jackson took over after that, scoring on runs of 19, 4 and 2 yards. Northgate (1-3) managed to cut Clayton Valley’s lead to 14-7 right after Lovett’s 39-yard TD pass to Keck when Blayne Ballard returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. But Jackson’s 19-yard run for six midway through the second quarter gave the Uglies a 20-7 advantage, and the Broncos never got closer than two scores after that. Even so, Northgate didn’t go away. DeAngelo Smith’s 5-yard run and Ballard’s point after made it 27-17 with nine minutes to go, but Jackson’s third TD run of the game, with eight minutes left, sealed it for Clayton Valley. The Uglies play at Liberty next Friday while Northgate will host Lincoln-San Francisco. Prior to the game there will be a ceremony celebrating Northgate’s 50th anniversary. The school opened in 1974. Roger Leonard, the Broncos’ first football coach, is expected to attend. – Mike Lefkow

Cardinal Newman 56, No. 18 Bishop O’Dowd 0

The Dragons couldn’t do anything right against North Bay powerhouse Cardinal Newman, surrendering 49 first-half points in a blowout loss. O’Dowd had just 31 yards of total offense in the first two quarters, struggling to get production from its top playmakers. O’Dowd (2-2) has dropped back-to-back games after winning at Monte Vista in Week 2. The Dragons are scheduled to play at Tennyson next week. – Nathan Canilao

No. 19 Monte Vista 38, James Logan 20

After trailing by 10 points early, Monte Vista found its groove in the second half to win at home. With Washington-bound running back Julian McMahan out with injury, junior Henry Lasker stepped up and rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Fresno State commit Brayden Turner completed 15 of 19 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Kellan Ford, Torrin Dumphy and Ian Ondricek each had a receiving score. Monte Vista (3-1) travels to Antioch next week. Logan (0-4) plays at Castro Valley. – Nathan Canilao

No. 20 Acalanes 63, College Park 28

College Park was able to keep it close for a quarter, but in the end Acalanes’ firepower was too much to handle for the Falcons. Tyler Winkles threw for three touchdowns and 292 yards, finding teammates Niko White, David Gonzales and Grant Ricker for scores. Senior back Austin Wampler rushed for a career-high 201 yards and three touchdowns, and Deonte LittleJohn ran for 109 yards and a touchdown to help lead Acalanes. David Roux recovered a fumble for a touchdown, Finley Rivera picked off his fourth pass of the season and Bethel Imasuen blocked a field goal and had a sack. College Park QB James Voorhies threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, and Trent Lanza caught two TDs while Demorian McCray hauled in one touchdown. College Park (0-4) will play at Las Lomas on Friday, and Acalanes (3-1) visits Amador Valley. – Joseph Dycus

No. 22 Menlo School 38, Capuchino 28

Menlo junior Chuck Wynn rushed for 90 yards on 21 carries, and converted a fake punt, as Menlo School held off Capuchino in San Bruno. Dave Kiefer was on the Peninsula and has the full story here.

No. 23 Santa Teresa 17, Hillsdale 0

The Saints came up with five turnovers, four interceptions and a fumble recovery as the San Jose school remained undefeated with a victory at home over Hillsdale. Cornerback Isaiah Rivera had two of the pass thefts, Robert Estrada one and sophomore Jalen Karriem another one, that he returned 76 yards for a touchdown. Glenn Reeves has the full recap here.

East Bay

Arcata 38, Oakland 20

Oakland quarterback Lenox Colvin threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns, and WR Malachi Sanchez pulled in a couple of TDs through the air as the Wildcats did their best to stay competitive with Arcata. Joseph Dycus was in Oakland and has the full story here.

Livermore 35, Moreau Catholic 28 (OT)

Matteo Lortie’s 13-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Matthew Benson in overtime was the difference in a battle of high-powered East Bay offenses. Moreau’s Jayden Bryant rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Jeremiah Charles was 16 for 26 for 212 yards and two scores. Livermore (3-1) will host Heritage next week. Moreau (1-3) plays Berkeley at home in its first league game of the season. – Nathan Canilao

Piedmont 49, Encinal 14

Piedmont’s offense was firing on all cylinders Friday night. Quarterback Markos Lagios threw for four touchdowns. Running back Xavier Henderson totaled two scores, with one coming on a kickoff return. Senior Tommy Ashton added two touchdowns. Piedmont (3-1) will have a bye week before playing Dougherty Valley on Oct. 4. Encinal dropped its third straight game and will travel to Concord High after its bye week. – Nathan Canilao

Tennyson 42, Mt. Eden 0

Sophomore Lamont McDonald accounted for five of Tennyson’s six touchdowns in the Lancers’ final non-league encounter. The 5-foot-11 speedster caught three TD passes, had a 90-yard touchdown run and returned a punt 60 yards for six. Teiler Tanimo threw four TD passes, including one of 15 yards to Jerome Davis. Tennyson (2-2) will host Bishop O’Dowd next Friday night in its West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division opener. The seven-team Foothill, one of three divisions in the WACC, should be a wide open race. Mt. Eden, which is in the WACC Shoreline, fell to 0-4. The Monarchs will try to reverse their fortunes next Friday when they host Concord in a non-league game. – Mike Lefkow

South Bay/Peninsula

Branham 48, Aragon 13

Branham led 35-0 at halftime and induced a running clock in the second half. After losing their opening game against Hollister, the Bruins have now won three straight. Zayne St. Laurent got the scoring started for Branham with a 67-yard TD catch from Jack Lewis. Michael Murphy caught a 15-yard pass from Lewis to double the lead. Richard Martin and Andrew Ho had short rushing TDs, and Lewis tossed yet another touchdown, an 8-yarder to Aden Newberg. Lewis notched his fourth passing TD with a 90-yard toss to Brayden Hodges early in the second half. Chris Von Barloewen caught Branham’s final TD on a 11-yard throw from Ho. Branham’s defense forced two fumbles and secured seven sacks, holding Aragon to 56 yards of total offense in the first half. Thomas Nguyen had three sacks and Joel Ruiz-Pineda posted two, while Deegan Waldorph and Von Barloewen each grabbed one. Von Barloewen added seven solo tackles, two assisted stops and a tackle for loss. Aragon got on the board with a fumble recovery touchdown by Kevin Wright. Carlmont 26, South San Francisco 21

Johnny Dunne connected with Sean Chopoff on two touchdown passes as Carlmont improved to 3-1. After South City went ahead 21-20 in the fourth quarter, the second Dunne-to-Chopoff touchdown pass provided the winning margin. Dunne was 7 of 16 for 157 yards. Chopoff had three catches for 113 yards as well as six tackles on defense. Kaisei Trotter rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries. Daniel Mattioli carried nine times for 56 yards and a TD and had two catches for 26 yards. Dylan Young also scored on the ground. Keoki Firenze led the way on defense with eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Both teams have byes next week. Carlmont plays host to Ukiah and South San Francisco (2-2) hosts Los Altos on Oct. 4. — Glenn Reeves

Christopher 47, Gilroy 0

Quarterback Jaxen Robinson distributed touchdown passes to three different receivers as Christopher coasted in its final non-league tuneup. The Cougars (3-1), whose only loss thus far was by four points to Carmel, begin league play in the tough BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division next Thursday with a visit to Branham. Robinson, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior with offers from Northern Arizona and Cal Poly, connected with Matthew Boles, Salomon Qunitero and Evan Vernon for TDs. Ray Waller, Josiah Garcia and Brady Hemeon had rushing touchdowns. Waller ran for 87 yards on eight carries. Kicker Rylan Antipuesto was 5-for-6 on extra points and booted his third and fourth field goals of the season, including one from 42 yards. Christopher led 33-0 at the half. Vernon had a big game all-around with eight tackles, two fumble recoveries and one sack in addition to his TD catch. Gilroy has been outscored 85-8 during an 0-3 start, and has lost 16 games in a row dating back to 2022. – Mike Lefkow

Gunn 28, Monta Vista 0

A battle of 3-0 teams ended with Gunn perhaps the new team in the driver’s seat in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Lake Division. The Titans ran the ball 52 times and controlled the action throughout. Christian Babcock was on site and has the full story from Cupertino.

Independence 26, Mt. Pleasant 25

Independence dug its way out of a 24-3 fourth-quarter deficit to win this one at home. “Very exciting game,” said Indy coach Jay Braun. Sixers quarterback Myles Pagaduan tossed two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the comeback. Anthony Garcia caught a 1-yard toss for a score and Mihn Vu snagged another 1-yard TD. Keoni Mendoza scored the crucial two-point conversion. Jacob Madriz converted both PATs and a 21-yard field goal. Indy’s defense snagged three sacks, and Cristian Calvetti recovered his third fumble of the season. Andrew Tafoya, Brycen Sessions and Epifano Montiel got into the end zone for Mt. Pleasant. Lincoln-San Jose 15, Leland 12

A battle of San Jose schools ended with Lincoln winning on the road. Kyan Phillips was the key player for the Lions, scoring both Lincoln touchdowns. He rushed for 175 yards on 10 carries. Brady Hernandez and Javien Louie each had a 4-yard rushing score for Leland. Graeson Wagner completed 5 of 11 passes for Lincoln, compiling 36 yards through the air. Ezariah Sofeni scored an important two-point conversion for the Lions. Lincoln kicker Leo Molina converted his lone extra point try. Christian Babcock

Mills 62, Lynbrook 0

This one was not close. Mills got its first win of the season in blowout fashion against a Lynbrook team still finding its way in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Lake Division. “Looking forward to a needed bye,” said Lynbrook coach Jerome Holloway. Mills senior Matthew Juul scored four total touchdowns, rushing for 114 yards and compiling 83 receiving yards on four receptions. Senior quarterback Givanni Angelini completed 12 of 17 passes for 185 yards, also rushing for 72 yards on three carries. He scored two touchdowns as well. Christian Babcock

Palo Alto 43, Fremont-Sunnyvale 14

Jeremiah Fung and Isaiah Phillips scored two touchdowns apiece to lead Palo Alto. Phillips scored on runs of 10 and 52 yards. Fung caught a 25-yard scoring pass from his brother, Justin Fung, and returned an interception for a touchdown. The scoring began with a tackle in the end zone for a safety by Joe Kessler on the second play of the game. Dylan Taylor scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, set up on a fumble recovery by Liam Giffen. Dylan Robinson caught a 44-yard TD pass from Justin Fung in the second quarter. Henry Buenrostro completed 6 of 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown for Fremont. He also rushed for 36 yards. Jadon Smith had four receptions for 68 yards. Palo Alto (3-1) plays at The King’s Academy and Fremont (1-3) is at Sequoia on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

Pioneer 24, Leigh 21

The home Mustangs managed a close win. Jesse Herrera led the charge offensively for Pioneer (2-2), compiling 210 yards rushing and a touchdown on 29 carries. Thomas Fries carried the ball five times for 40 yards and a TD. Sam Natividad caught four passes for 50 yards and a score. Braeden Ries completed 11 of 17 passes for an even 100 yards and a TD. Nathan Bearrows converted 3 of 3 PATs and a 30-yard field goal. Jordan Nunez totaled 14 tackles. Charlie Lyon had three passing TDs for Leigh. Marcus Glanville, Nik Velikanovs and Toby Lauer were the beneficiaries for the Longhorns (2-2). Miles Huntington intercepted a Ries pass. Christian Babcock

Sacred Heart Prep 24, The King’s Academy 21

A back-and-forth Friday night matchup ended with Sacred Heart Prep on top. Sasha Barndad scored twice for SHP (2-2), once on the ground and once through the air. Andrew Shen rushed for a touchdown, and Nathan Fox converted the all-important 36-yard field goal for the Gators. Jaiden Flores had a TD catch for King’s Academy, as did Kyle Welch. Reid Black recorded a rushing TD for the Knights (1-2). Christian Babcock

Gunn runs over Monta Vista to keep early control of PAL Lake Division race

San Mateo 13, Los Altos 7

San Mateo edged out the home Eagles in a close one. Los Altos led 7-6 at halftime, but the Bearcats drove the length of the field early in the second half for the game-winning touchdown. An early pick-six by Yianni Fitzgerald got San Mateo on the board, but Los Altos responded with Giancarlo Mendoza’s 23-yard TD pass to Colton Caputo. Emmanuel Fitzgerald had a monster ground game for San Mateo, rushing for 257 yards on 23 carries. Caputo had 58 receiving yards to accompany his touchdown through the air. Mendoza finished 18 of 35 passing for 126 yards. Christian Babcock

Saratoga 42, Cupertino 7

Saratoga relied on balanced playmaking to take home its second PAL Lake Division win of the season and improve to 3-0 overall. Junior running back/linebacker Brennan Pak scored two touchdowns for the Falcons and also punched in a two-point conversion. Senior Keion Ashjaee-Marshall added two scores of his own, and senior wide receiver/strong safety Doug Bettinger notched two TDs as well to fill out Saratoga’s tally on the scoreboard. – Christian Babcock
