A major highway closure is coming to the East Bay this weekend.

“When the freeway reopens at 4 a.m. Monday, there will be a smooth ride for motorists,” said Caltrans spokesperson Janis Mara.

Mara said workers will demolish the existing pavement, cover it with asphalt and rebar, and then pour concrete on top of it.

“The thing with concrete is, it lasts for decades,” Mara said.

Caltrans says all backroads will be open to drivers in the construction project location.

“The short-term pain of today is going to be a long-term gain for motorists,” Mara said.

Caltrans says the full closure this weekend will accomplish the amount of work that otherwise would require an estimated 40 nighttime closures.

Additionally, the far-left express lane and left shoulder on northbound I-680 between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon will be closed for work this weekend.

Caltrans says there will also be two additional partial weekend closures in this location between Oct. 4 and Oct. 7, and from Oct. 18 to Oct. 21.

California Highway Patrol officers and message signs will be on hand to help guide drivers during all of the closures.

Rain would cancel any closures and they would be rescheduled.
