Rockslide shuts down U.S. 40 in both directions near Steamboat Springs

U.S. 40 was closed Wednesday in both directions just west of Milner after a rockslide covered a stretch of the two-lane highway.

The highway was shut down around 8:15 a.m. between County Road 68 and County Road 50 — about 10 miles west of Steamboat Springs — according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

A photo from a driver in the area shows a pile of large rocks that crashed through the guardrail and covered both lanes of the undivided highway.

From our friend Shannon Lukens in Steamboat:
There is a large rockslide in the westbound lane of Highway 40, just west of Milner. That lane is completely blocked. It is at Mile Marker 120. Highway 40 is closed in both directions. Photo courtesy Kody May. pic.twitter.com/1ib3HgbdyQ

A planned eastbound closure of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon to clean up the remains of Tuesday’s rollover crash is postponed as crews work to clear the rockslide, transportation officials said.
