An Amtrak train Sunday struck a person who snuck onto the train tracks in Grand County.
The California Zephyr train was traveling from Chicago to San Francisco Bay on Sunday when it spotted a person on the tracks about two miles west of Granby, according to Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari.
Unable to stop in time, the train collided with the person on the tracks.
“There were no reported injuries to the 205 passengers or Amtrak crew members onboard,” Magliari said in an emailed statement to the Denver Post. “The train was delayed by about four hours at the Granby Station before continuing west.”
According to Amtrak records, the California Zephyr left the Granby station on time and headed west at 11:22 a.m. The train was scheduled to arrive at the next stop — Glenwood Springs — around 2:30 p.m., but didn’t pull into the station until 7:15 p.m.
Magliari said the person involved in the crash was conscious when first responders arrived, but an update on their condition was not available.

“These incidents can affect everyone involved — those who are injured or die and their families, our train crews and our passengers,” Magliari said. “They also serve as critical reminders about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.”
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the person trespassing on the tracks.
