Woman killed in sword attack in San Dimas

A stabbing by someone wielding a samurai sword in a San Dimas neighborhood left a woman dead and two other women hospitalized on Thursday afternoon, July 18.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas station received a call around 3:20 p.m. of a woman with cuts on her leg and bleeding, Sgt. Rick Duarte said, adding the line was then cut off.

Video obtained by KTLA showed a woman with an injured leg carrying a katana – a type of samurai sword. A patrol car stopped near her as she stood next to a U-Haul truck. She dropped the sword and raised her hands.

The woman directed deputies to a house in the 300 block of Huntington Avenue, where they found a woman with lacerations who died at the scene, Sheriff’s Lt. Daniel Vizcarra told KTLA and other news media on Thursday.

Deputies also found another woman in the house who wasn’t injured in the stabbing but was taken to the hospital because of a medical emergency, he said.

The medical examiner’s office has not yet identified the woman who died.

Detectives on Friday morning were still trying to determine the relationship among the three women and what led to the fatal stabbing.

“While the investigation is ongoing and we are learning more details of this tragedy, on behalf of the city of San Dimas, we want to thank the San Dimas fire and the sheriff’s stations for their quick response in securing the scene and helping the victims,” said Eric Nakano, mayor pro tem for San Dimas.
