Suspect in West Covina bus-stop stabbing caught in Pomona

A man wanted for the July 7 fatal stabbing of a 64-year-old North Hollywood man at a West Covina bus stop was arrested over the weekend in Pomona for allegedly trying to kill a cashier at a fast-food restaurant with a knife, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this week charged Rodney Rene Chapman Jr., 34, with murder and attempted murder, court records show.

Chapman has five previous felony convictions dating back to 2010, West Covina police said in a statement.

It appears the stabbing of Kevin Davis, apparently waiting for a bus, was unprovoked, West Covina police Lt. Brandon Karmann said. Officers and firefighters were called that day to California Avenue and West Covina Parkway at 3:47 a.m.

West Covina police declined to say how they identified Chapman, who they believe is homeless, as the suspect.

On Sunday, July 14, Pomona police received a call at 2:12 p.m. about an attempted stabbing at the Burger King at 2085 West Holt Ave.

A man came up to the register with a chef-style cooking knife and tried to slash a cashier who was not injured, said Aly Mejia, a spokeswoman for Pomona police.

Police looking for the suspect were told he was hiding behind a tree, she said. After his arrest, Pomona police found out he was wanted for the West Covina murder and called West Covina police, she said.

As of Thursday, Chapman was being held without bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
