Oregon State loses Pac-12 opener at UCLA – Former ­Ridgeview High player George Mendazona had a career-high three of the Beavers’ four hits, but it was not enough to keep Oregon State (0-1 Pac-12, 13-2-1 overall) from getting shut out 8-0 by UCLA in the teams’ Pac-12 opener in Los Angeles on Friday night. The Beavers will try to bounce back Saturday in the second of a three-game series.

Ducks drop conference opener against Washington – Oregon (0-1, 10-6) took a slim early lead Friday night but Washington rallied with a five-run fifth inning and pulled away to top the Ducks 9-3 in both teams’ Pac-12 opener in Eugene. The teams will play the second of their three-game series on Saturday in Eugene.


Beavers stay hot, win 5th straight – Oregon State (1-0 Pac-12, 17-5 overall) kicked off the Pac-12 portion of its schedule with its fifth straight victory, a 5-1 triumph over Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona on Friday night.

Arizona hands Oregon 7th straight loss – The Oregon Ducks (0-1, 11-11) dropped their Pac-12 season opener and seventh straight overall, an 8-0 loss to 12th-ranked Arizona on Friday night. The Ducks managed just two hits against Arizona ace Taylor McQuillin.


Browns’ Hunt suspended 8 games – The NFL has suspended Browns running back Kareem Hunt for eight games after a video showed him kicking a woman and he was later involved in a fight at a resort. The league on Friday cited a violation of its personal conduct policy “for physical altercations at his residence in Cleveland last February and at a resort in Ohio last June.” Hunt will not be paid during the half-season suspension, which he will not appeal.
