Kaitlan Collins: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Kaitlan Collins is a CNN reporter who had to issue a public apology on Sunday night, after a series of old tweets surfaced in which she had made homophobic slurs. Collins tweeted out an apology, saying, “When I was in college, I used ignorant language in a few tweets to my friends. It was immature but it doesn’t represent the way I feel at all. I regret it and apologize.”

So far, CNN hasn’t said whether it plans to discipline Collins for the tweets, which were made years before she started working for the network.

Here’s what you need to know:

The offensive tweets come from Collins’s college days at the University of Alabama. She reportedly used the word “fag” in one tweet and, in another tweet, she wrote, T“Idk if I wanna room with a lesbian.”

One person who works close to Collins at CNN told the Washington Examiner Sunday that they were “personally offended” by the old tweets.

The Log Cabin Republicans “discovered” the tweets on Sunday and brought them into the public eye, by tweeting about them.

2. Collins Worked for the Daily Caller & Was Criticized for the Questions She Asked Trump

Before joining CNN, Collins worked as White House correspondent for the conservative Daily Caller. While there, Collins faced some backlash after President Trump called on her — and not on CNN’s reporters — at a news conference. Media critic Howard Kurtz charged that the presdient was trying to avoid tough questions by calling on her, since the Daily Caller was perceived as sympathetic to the Trump administration.

Collins defended herself in an interview on Fox News. She said, “No, I don’t think he should only call on conservative outlets — I think he should call on the whole room — but I don’t think there was this hand-wringing over who the president was calling on when Barack Obama refused to call on Fox News and only called on left-leaning outlets. No one was going on TV saying the fix was in then. It’s just because it’s a conservative outlet, and they’re not used to The Daily Caller getting a question.”

She added, “They’re offended because the question they wanted answered didn’t get asked. I wasn’t aware that we were all supposed to go in there and ask the same question. What’s the point of me being here if I’m going to ask the same question as Jim Acosta or Hallie Jackson?”
