When you’re health conscious, it’s a given that you’re going to spend time thinking about what you eat. But what you might be surprised to know is how many calories are in most alcoholic drinks. Some of the most popular drinks ring in at over 500 calories, and others at less than 100 calories.
This doesn’t mean you should never drink them, or that you should drink more than one, but it is something to be aware of as you decide on your drink of choice. It’s also worth noting that every bartender will make drinks differently and that calories are not the only thing to be considered.
With that in mind, we rounded up the average calorie count of some of your favorite alcoholic drinks — and how to lower the calorie count on some with simple swaps.
Pina Coladas can be pretty high in calories.
According to Newsweek, a traditional pina colada, composed of rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconut can contain as much as 650 calories, according to Newsweek. Opt for light rum, or substitute unsweetened coconut water for cream of coconut to get more drink for fewer calories, suggests registered dietitian and author of “The New You (and Improved) Diet,” Keri Glassman in Fitness magazine.
Mimosas hover around 100 calories.
The average 8-ounce mimosa contains 150-200 calories, according to The Daily Meal.
You can opt for less ginger beer for a low-calorie Moscow Mule.
This refreshing drink, typically served in a copper mug contains 138 calories per serving, according to Eat This Not That. The recipe calls for 2 ounces of vodka, 4-6 ounces of ginger beer, and a half-ounce of lime juice. Opt for 3-4 ounces of ginger beer in your recipe to have a 100 calorie Moscow Mule.
