Six cast members from “Ocean’s 8” appeared on the Today show to discuss the movie and their experiences on set.
Anne Hathaway revealed that her co-stars were “fantastic” and understanding about her need to pump breast milk while filming.
When shooting went long for one scene, Hathaway said that she was uncomfortable and wished she had pumped earlier — so the women demanded that they all take a break.
The inimitable cast members of “Ocean’s 8” are still making media rounds to promote the new film. In doing so, they have dismantled the stereotypes that women are incompetent or that they can’t truly get along. In one such instance, the women banded together to support Anne Hathaway’s dual responsibilities as a mother and actor.
Hathaway revealed during a recent appearance on the Today show that her co-stars — who include women like Rihanna, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Sarah Paulson — were “fantastic” and understanding about her need to pump breast milk while filming.
Because Hathaway had recently given birth and was still breastfeeding her son when filming began, pumping was essential — but she was initially unsure whether it would be accepted on set.
“I had that moment where I was like, ‘Oh, is this going to be a positive environment to be able to do that in?'” she said. “I remember there was one moment where we were shooting a little long, and I just kind of went [groans], and the girls were like ‘What’s wrong?’ And I said, ‘I’m sorry, I should have pumped an hour ago.’ And the girls just like formed around me, and they were like, ‘We need a break. We need a break. Annie needs to go do this.’ And it was just like, I mean, who gets that? Everybody should.”
Indeed, breastfeeding in public is still viciously stigmatized and breastfeeding at work can even come with professional blowback. So it’s understandable why Hathaway would have reservations. Being a working mom is too often fraught with hurdles, despite research suggesting that mothers are generally more productive than childless women.
Given all this, it’s extremely encouraging to see such high-profile, powerful women openly supporting each other in this way.
Hathaway has previously opened up about how her co-stars made her feel confident about her post-birth weight. The actress said that she felt self-conscious when she went to work and was “aware” that her body was a different size from what people were used to.
Hathaway said that when she saw co-stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, they complimented her jeans. But the comment that made Hathaway beam came from Rihanna.
“Rihanna looks up and goes, ‘Damn girl, you got an ass,'” Hathaway recalled. “And I of course freaked out and loved it so much.”
According to Hathaway, Rihanna added: “You got an ass like me.”
“I can honestly say I’ve never had that experience on a film set before,” Hathaway said.
