Body pulled from South Platte River, fears it could be missing Minnesota man last seen in December

Denver rescue crews pulled a body from the South Platte River Saturday afternoon, stoking fears it could be a man who was last seen early Dec. 15.

The body was found near the river just south of Interstate 25’s Alameda Avenue exit about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. It was discovered by a member of a volunteer search crew looking for 29-year-old Adam Gilbertson, who has been the focus of his family’s intense efforts to discover his whereabouts.

“The majority of the search party that set out today, don’t even know Adam,” said Mark Wonder, who was a member of a group of volunteers that set out Saturday morning to find any traces of Gilbertson. “We wanted to try to take the route that he may have gone, kind of retraced his steps.

The volunteers, family members and friends met near South Bannock Street and West Alameda and then fanned out to begin searching the area. When a member of the search party found the body, they called 911.

The volunteers were responding to pleas for help from Gilberton’s family. They are from Randolph, Minn., and know no one from Denver, Wonder said. They have been to Denver at least two times to search for Adam.

“They just needed help with an unfamiliar place,” he said.

The identify of the body will not be known until an autopsy is done within the next few days, said Denver Police Sgt. John White. The badly decomposed body is a male and appears to have been in the water for some time.

“There is no way to tell who this individual is until the autopsy,” White said.
