Edmonton Oilers fans stoked that Team Canada at Olympics is in large part Team ex-Oilers

The roster for the Canadian Olympic team is out and it’s stacked with ex-Edmonton Oilers, namely Ben Scrivens, Gilbert Brule, Derek Roy and Rob Klinkhammer.

On Twitter the reaction was positive from many Oilers fans:

WheatNOil @WheatNOil: “I do enjoy that, if you include Chris Kelly who skated with the team this year, 20% of the team was directly connected to the Oilers organization.”

JD @JackieDee16: “I’m shocked not to see any of the junior guys get a shot…and I laughed at good ol’ Gilbert and Klink …but whatevs. Go Canada! ”

RG3 @rascalgas: “I may be in the minority, but I actually prefer Olympic hockey when it’s not an ‘all-star game.’”

Brent Kellington @IbBK: “Really excited to see @ben_scrivens play for Team Canada! As an Oilers fan I loved him, and hope he has Gold in his future!”

McFeniex @Feniex17: “It (the Olympic hockey team) just shows the immense wealth of hockey talent this great nation of ours has. … Guys who made the Olympic men’s hockey team(also the women that made the women’s team), well done. I am sure they’ll represent Canada great & wear pride each time they step on the ice..”

Alan Smithee @oiler_country: “I do not care who’s on it, as long as they represent who we are: Canadians.”

Kurt Leavins, Cult of Hockey: “You won’t catch me making fun of the Canadian Men’s Olympic Hockey roster. Level playing field in the tourney, & anytime you put Canadians in that jersey, they show up. #GoCanada.”

Bruce McCurdy, The Cult of Hockey: “Man, this is going to be even better than the Spengler Cup! …. Jokes aside, I have every intention of following the Olympic hockey tournament just as closely as ever, NHLers or no NHLers. Other than that pesky time zone issue… I don’t need the NHL’s stamp of approval to care about hockey. I’ve followed Canada’s Olympians since the days of Father David Bauer & I intend to keep on doing just that. Roy (6), Klinkhammer (5), Scrivens (4) & Brule (3) all played on multiple NHL teams, not just the Oilers. There are probably ex-[insert NHL team here] of every stripe; the team is loaded with journeymen I think this year’s tourney will be good as is. Not the best of the best, but all major hockey nations dealing with the best of the rest, & the minnows with more of a fighting chance than usual… Lots of good leagues & players in Europe. I enjoy the Spengler Cup every December & this will be a couple of cuts above that I expect.”

My take

I’ve been pretty damn sour about the Olympics, as I love best on best competitions and I dearly wanted to see Connor McDavid represent Canada at the 2018 Olympics. But not to be. I was earlier swearing off watching this watered down tournament, but I have to say I find the enthusiasm of some of these Oilers fans to be contagious. I also have to to respect anyone who is standing up for Canada and sacrificing …read more
