‘One Day at a Time’ season 2 premiere date announced with throwback main title sequence [WATCH]

One Day at a Time” is returning for a second season in 2018, and Netflix has found a unique way to announce the premiere date. The cast of the revival series filmed a shot-by-shot recreation of the main title sequence from the original series that ran from 1975 to 1984. Watch the throwback opening credits above, and watch season two of the acclaimed series when it returns on Friday, January 26.

The original “One Day at a Time” starred Bonnie Franklin as a divorced mother raising two daughters (Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli). It won two Emmys and three Golden Globes over the course of its nine-season run. It was brought back in 2017 in a re-imagined form with Justina Machado starring as a Cuban-American war veteran raising her two children with the help of her own mother (Rita Moreno). Even the theme music was remixed, with Gloria Estefan performing the new version. But just like the previous series, the 2017 remake is produced by the legendary Norman Lear, a four-time Emmy winner for the classic series “All in the Family,” which also used the sitcom format to explore thorny social issues.

The Netflix series was mostly overlooked by the Emmys, receiving only one nomination for its picture editing. But on Wednesday morning, December 6, the series got a boost when Moreno was nominated for a Critics’ Choice TV Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. The Golden Globes and SAG Awards will announce their nominations soon, so time will tell if “One Day at a Time” will continue its awards upswing.
